Is welding classed as high-risk construction work?+
Welding by itself isn't a named category, but the jobs around it usually are. Welding in a confined space, on or near energised electrical installations, or at height with a fall risk over 2 metres all count as high-risk construction work — and each one makes a SWMS mandatory before work starts. On top of that, most principal contractors require a SWMS for any hot work as standard site policy.
Do I need a hot work permit as well as a SWMS?+
Usually, yes — they do different jobs. The hot work permit is the site's sign-off for a specific task on a specific day. The SWMS is your documented work method: fire watch, extinguishers within reach, welding screens, fume extraction, cylinder handling. Builders typically want both sitting in the site file before sparks fly.
What should a welding SWMS actually cover?+
The hazards that put welders in hospital: toxic fumes (especially off galvanised or coated steel), arc flash and arc eye, fire and hot metal, electric shock from damaged leads, and compressed gas cylinders.
