Do I need a SWMS for a small strip-out or partial demo?+
Almost certainly. If the work touches a load-bearing element, disturbs asbestos, uses powered mobile plant, or involves a fall risk over 2 metres, it's high-risk construction work and a SWMS is mandatory. Even a soft strip of an older building usually ticks at least one of those boxes.
Is a SWMS the same as a demolition licence or work plan?+
No — they're separate. Depending on your state, some demolition work also needs a licence or notification to your state's WHS regulator before it starts. The SWMS is the task-level document: the step-by-step method your crew reads and signs before picking up a tool. You may well need both.
How does asbestos fit into a demolition SWMS?+
Before demolition starts on an older building you need to know where asbestos is — that means checking the asbestos register or getting an inspection done first. Most removal work must be done by a licensed removalist, and your state's WHS regulator sets the exact thresholds. Your SWMS should state what was found, what's been cleared, and what happens if suspect material turns up mid-job.
