Why plumbers need one.
Trenches deeper than 1.5 metres, confined space entry into pits and manholes, and work on or near pressurised gas distribution mains or piping are all high-risk construction work under the WHS Regulations — meaning a SWMS is legally required before you start. That covers a lot of everyday plumbing, from drainage runs to gas fitting. And even where the law doesn't strictly demand one, most builders won't let you on site without it.

Do plumbers need a SWMS for residential jobs?+
If the job involves high-risk construction work, yes — the rules don't care whether it's a house or a high-rise. A 1.6-metre-deep sewer trench in someone's backyard needs a SWMS the same as one on a commercial site. If there's no HRCW involved, a SWMS isn't legally required, but plenty of builders ask for one anyway.
How deep does a trench have to be before I need a SWMS?+
Trenches and shafts deeper than 1.5 metres are high-risk construction work, so the SWMS has to be sorted before you dig. But don't stop at the tape measure — working near an excavator, or near underground gas or electrical services, can trigger the requirement on shallower digs too.
Does working in a manhole or sewer pit count as confined space work?+
Usually, yes — and confined space work is high-risk construction work, full stop. Your SWMS needs to cover atmospheric testing, a standby person, communication, and an emergency rescue plan before anyone goes in. It's one of the areas regulators come down on hardest.
Do I need a SWMS for gas fitting work?+
Work on or near pressurised gas distribution mains or piping is on the HRCW list, so yes — a SWMS is required before you start. It should cover isolation, purging, controlling ignition sources, and what happens if you get a leak.
The builder wants my SWMS before I start — can't I just sign theirs?+
It's your work, so it's your responsibility to make sure a SWMS covers it — handing over your own document is the clean way to do it, and it's what most principal contractors expect. Ours takes about 60 seconds to build and you can review and edit every step before paying.
